Chapter Five

THE POWER HAD ITS LAST hurrah and still Simon hadn’t come in. Adam had watched him from the window earlier as he split wood for one of the ominous piles all over the yard. It was like watching someone dance. The precision, the flex of muscle, the choreographed movements. He was so graceful, yet the most masculine of beasts. But it was dark and the exterior lighting no longer had power and Simon still didn’t come in.

A generator roared to life, bringing with it the fridge and a few lights. Well-prepared Simon. Adam went about lighting the kerosene lamps in the living area. It was even better this way. Like a cocoon. Nearly dark, firelight and flame throwing shadows and heat. Adam, the city boy that he was, never realized how much he’d like a place like Simon’s. How much he liked Simon.

Before he spilled his secrets, Simon had been surprising Adam all day. The gruff exterior hid so much from the world. Beneath it, Simon was funny even as he was serious. He was charming even as he was bearish. He was—

The door opened, and with it the wind and the bear himself interrupted Adam’s thoughts. He was dusted in white like a Yeti for God’s sakes

Adam crossed the room. “I was just about to come looking for you.”

Simon grunted as he dropped an armload of wood into the box next to the stove.

“You must be freezing. Why didn’t you wear a coat?” Without questioning why or how Simon would react, Adam began unbuttoning the red and black flannel he’d worn over his long underwear. “You’re soaked.”

Simon pushed his hands away. “I can’t chop wood wearing a coat. Gets in the way.” Simon’s own frozen fingers seemed to be getting in the way of his buttons.

“Let me help you,” Adam insisted, finishing what Simon struggled with. “There is plenty of wood all over the place around here. You didn’t need to split more in the freezing cold. I can hear the wind from in here. You’re so...” He peeled the shirt over Simon’s shoulders.

“I’m so...?”

Simon had stopped fighting him, and a new tension built. Something had changed. The air crackled with it and an ache in his groin began to radiate through his body.

“Finish your thought, librarian. I’m so...grouchy? Surly? Impossible? Ill-mannered...bad tempered—”

Adam laid a hand on Simon’s chest. Felt the hard muscles tighten under his hand. “You’re so challenging. Exciting. Provocative—”

With his beefy body, Simon pushed Adam against the wall, hands resting on either side of Adam’s head. “Do you know what you are getting into? What you’re flirting with?” He rolled his hips so the hard length of him was pushed into Adam. Then he leaned in, his beard brushing against Adam’s cheek as he lowered his voice and octave and spoke into his ear. “Is this what you want?”

Adam shivered. “I want you, Simon. Whatever and however much of you I can get.”

Simon groaned and took Adams lips. Sampling lightly, tasting, teasing. The kisses kept him off balance in the masculine cage Simon had made of his body.
